New NES Classic Shipments Coming, Nintendo Says

The NES Classic Edition is coming back to stores in summer of 2018.

Still bummed about missing out on the NES Classic Edition? Fret not, fellow retro gamers, because more opportunities are coming next year. Or in the words of Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”

In an apparent reversal of this past spring’s official discontinuation, Nintendo has announced that they will be producing and shipping more 8-bit mini consoles in the summer of 2018. Excellent news for the droves of people who couldn’t get their hands on the elusive emulation device, even via the odd restock at ThinkGeek a few months back. If we’re being honest, this is somewhat out-of-character for the house that Mario built. As everyone knows, the company makes some strange decisions with its products when it comes to stock and manufacturing, so in that regard, it’s refreshing to witness what appears to be a rather pro-consumer move by a gaming entity that’s notorious for botching (intentionally or not, you decide) its own supply and demand situations.

Alongside the previous announcement, Nintendo has also stated that it will continue to pump out SNES Classic Editions well into 2018, with “more units than were shipped of the NES Classic Edition” and “shipments arriving in stores regularly”. This revises earlier sentiments that the tiny Super Nintendo would be discontinued after this coming holiday season. Hopefully the bit about providing a steady stream of devices will prove true, though judging by how fast pre-orders sold out last month, it’s difficult to be optimistic.

Here’s the full press release from Business Wire:

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Due to incredible demand for the upcoming Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo plans to ship the retro-inspired product into 2018. Originally, shipments were announced to cease at the end of this calendar year.

In addition, more units of Super NES Classic Edition will ship on its Sept. 29 launch day in the U.S. than were shipped of NES Classic Edition all last year, with subsequent shipments arriving in stores regularly. Fans have shown their unbridled enthusiasm for these Classic Edition systems, so Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves.

The Super NES Classic Edition system features 21 legendary Super NES games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid. Launching on Sept. 29 at a suggested retail price of only $79.99, Super NES Classic Edition plugs directly into the TV using the provided HDMI cable, and comes with two wired controllers.

Next summer, Nintendo will also bring back the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system with new shipments. More information about the timing of the return of NES Classic Edition will be announced in the future.

NES Classic Edition features 30 classic NES games such as the original Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong.

As September 29 looms ever closer, one can only speculate about the ensuing circus. Who knows—maybe Nintendo will surprise everyone and make it rain SNES Classic Editions and we’ll all be raging at Super Mario Kart in pure jubilation. But as far as next summer goes, I’m planning on starting a line at my local Best Buy later on today. You know, to wait for new NES Classic shipments. Camping out in front of a retail store for almost a year is totally healthy, right?
