Somebody Mysteriously Purchased A Brand-New Copy Of 'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' For The Sega Game Gear
Somebody has recently purchased a brand new copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear, which is very unusual considering that the game was released in 1992.
The latest entry in the collection of weird video game stories is certainly a strange one. However, an analyst personally saw to it that the mystery surrounding the Sonic the Hedgehog game was explained.
Somebody Purchased A Brand New Game For The Sega Game Gear
Brand-new Sega Game Gear games should no longer be part of sales reports. However, NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella discovered that somebody recently purchased an unopened copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear.
To put things in perspective, the copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that appeared in sales reports was not a used one. It was sold not through a consignment shop but at a legitimate retailer.
Like, was it just buried in some back room the last twenty years? Did it get lost underneath some retail fixture? Was it a twenty something year old pre-order? What was the reaction when that person who bought it saw it? So many questions I have.— Mat Piscatella (@MatPiscatella) April 28, 2018
In addition, the Sega Game Gear, which had been launched in 1991 in North America, was discontinued in 1997. It means that the retailer that sold the game held on to the brand-new copy 26 years after its release and 21 years after Sega ended production of the handheld console.
One suggested explanation is that the game was sold as part of the Toys R Us sell-off, which include things on the display shelves and storage units. Perhaps the brand-new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 copy was sitting in a Toys U Us store somewhere for the past two decades?
Piscatella, through his series of tweets, looked like he was not letting it go until he found out what really happened, where the game was sold, and who purchased it. Fortunately, the power of the internet provided the answer.
Here's Who Bought The Brand-New Copy Of 'Sonic The Hedgehog 2'
A relative of the mysterious buyer finally reached out to Piscatella to end the mystery. Replying to one of the analyst's tweets, a user who goes by the name MihaelMELLO_K revealed that it was his brother-in-law who purchased the game. The price tag was $6.99, and it was bought at a store in Wisconsin.

The brand-new copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was purchased in February and after checking Bay prices, presumably to see if it may have been sold for a profit, they decided to instead open the game and play it. They have a Sega Game Gear, unfortunately, they found that it was not working properly.
Perhaps the next strange video game report will involve somebody buying a brand-new Sega Game Gear. If that ever happens, one may already have an idea who the customer could possibly be.
